November 05, 2018 By Wayne Carter and Nataly Keomoungkhoun Good morning! Here is a look at the top headlines as we start the day. 🌤️ Weather: Partly cloudy and windy, with a high of 79. 🔎 Prefer the online view? It's [here](. Sherley Woods, mother of O'Shae Terry, who was shot and killed Sept. 1 by an Arlington police officer during a traffic stop, holds a photo of her son at her home in Forest Hill. (Rose Baca/Staff Photographer) investigative report 'We're at war': Anger, questions mount after a traffic stop ends in a fatal shooting by police in Arlington          Scarfing down a cheeseburger as he steered his SUV, O'Shae Terry looked up and saw the flashing police lights behind him. An Arlington officer had spotted Terry's expired registration. Terry, 24, pulled over. He had his friend in the car, and drugs and a gun concealed in a backpack in the far rear seat. What began as a routine traffic stop Sept. 1 spiraled after a second officer, Bau Tran, arrived and the police announced they would search the car because they smelled marijuana. Within 12 minutes of being stopped, Terry was dead. Three experts who reviewed videos of the encounter said Tran's decision to shoot might have been reasonable because he was in danger. But they differed on whether the officer unnecessarily placed himself in peril in the first place. [Read the full story from reporter Naomi Martin.]( Carbon monoxide poisioning: Two men in critical condition were using a [gas generator without proper ventilation]( at Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth fire officials said. Immigration: Armed militia groups, [including one from Texas](, head to the U.S.-Mexico border. Elections 2018 Trump and Ellen, debate quips and tent camps: defining moments in Ted Cruz-Beto O'Rourke contest Every campaign has its defining moments. In the nail-biter between Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Beto O’Rourke, it’s too soon to know [which of the debate quips, attack ads and viral videos made the difference.]( There were many ingredients in this epic battle between a tea party darling who was runner-up for the presidential nomination and a charismatic and unabashedly liberal congressman who managed to put a scare into Republicans in a state they’ve controlled for a quarter century, smashing the record for money raised by any Senate candidate ever, anywhere. Crowded field: In a jumbled race to fill Dwaine Caraway's City Council seat, [the path for an Election Night win is hard to find.]( Reading the opposition: Ken Paxton's second attack ad in two weeks [means he's "shaking in his boots,"]( his opponent says. Commentary: Christians [must remember these five things]( as they head to the polls, writes Todd Wagner. Business Dallas 'among small handful of communities' in late-stage talks for Amazon HQ2 [Amazon is in "late-stage talks" with Dallas](, New York City and odds-on favorite Northern Virginia for its prized $5 billion second headquarters, [according to the Wall Street Journal.]( The Journal's report, posted online Sunday afternoon and citing "people familiar with the matter," followed a similarly sourced story in [the Washington Post on Saturday]( that indicated Crystal City, Va., will be the chosen location. Located right across from Washington, D.C. along the Potomac River, Crystal City is often cited as the frontrunner for the project that'll create as many as 50,000 jobs over the next decade. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings declined Sunday through a spokesman to discuss the Journal's report. Darren Grubb, spokesman for the Dallas Regional Chamber, which coordinated the region's bid, also declined comment. Getting healthy: Dallas is emerging as [a hub for health care staffing and services](, writes Mitchell Schnurman. Nothing to sneeze at: A professor's allergy test led to a $48,329 bill. [Here's how she handled the irritating issue.]( EDITORS' PICKS - Fatal pileup: Two people were killed when a horse wandered onto a rural road, [causing a five-car crash in Johnson County.]( - For the laughs: Saturday Night Live's [Pete Davidson faces backlash](after he compared Dan Crenshaw, a congressional candidate and war veteran, to "hitman in a porno." - Fatal robbery: Police identified a Garland man who was killed [when armed robbers ambushed him and his uncle.]( - Child porn case: A Killeen couple [pleaded guilty to producing material that may involve dozens of victims](, some as young as 8 months. - Poll slide: [See where Texas and Texas A&M landed]( in the most recent AP Top 25 after tough losses on Saturday. - Commentary: On the world's longest migration route, [all roads lead to Texas](, write Rob Curran and Andrew Nelson. Anita and Karl Wehmeyer hold daughters Peggy (left) and Anita in this undated family photo. (Peggy Wehmeyer) Finally... The Pittsburgh synagogue attacker reminds me of my anti-Semitic father and our family secret From contributing columnist Peggy Wehmeyer: The Pittsburgh massacre is forcing me to come to grips with whose daughter I am. It's not as easy as it might seem. As much as I resisted and rejected my father's anti-Semitism, eventually cutting him out of my life altogether, his blood runs through my veins, and with it, a toxic familial shame. Embracing my Jewish identity hasn't been easy either. By the time I learned I was Jewish, I had already chosen my religion, one that belonged to neither of my parents, but that includes a history of Jewish persecution. Christianity was my ticket out of a dysfunctional, toxic home. But the Messiah I embraced isn't the one my Jewish family is waiting for. How could I tell my rabbi cousin in Jerusalem at Shabbat dinner that I had chosen to follow Jesus? What do I say to my mother's cousin, Ludwig, who became an atheist after barely surviving Buchenwald, that I believed in a loving God? The slaughter in Pittsburgh raises questions that strains the credibility of any faith. What kind of God would allow such horrific evil? [Read the full column.]( 👋 That's all for this morning!
