Trump calls for a 'new American moment' in his first State of the Union address
Addressing a deeply divided nation, President Donald Trump [called for a "new American moment" of unity]( Tuesday night and challenged lawmakers to make good on long-standing promises to fix a dangerously fractured immigration system, warning of evil outside forces seeking to undermine the nation's way of life.
Trump's State of the Union address blended self-congratulation and calls for optimism amid a growing economy with dark warnings about deadly gangs, the scourge of drugs and violent immigrants living in the United States illegally. He cast the debate over immigration â an issue that has long animated his most ardent supporters â as a battle between heroes and villains, praising the work of an immigration agent who arrested more than 100 gang members and saluting the families of two alleged gang victims.
Trump spoke with tensions running high on Capitol Hill. An impasse over immigration prompted a three-day government shutdown earlier this year, and lawmakers appear no closer to resolving the status of the "Dreamers" â young people living in the U.S. illegally â ahead of a new Feb. 8 deadline for funding operations. The parties have also clashed this week over the plans of Republicans on the House intelligence committee to release a classified memo on the Russia investigation involving Trump's presidential campaign â a decision the White House backs but the Justice Department is fighting.
Reaction:Â What did [Texas Republicans and Democrats have to say]( after Trump's State of the Union address?
Analysis: As Trump pitched bipartisanship, the [GOP rallied and Democrats found his poll numbers easy to resist](, writes Washington Bureau Chief Todd J. Gillman.
Rhetoric turned into results: Here's [a look at some Texas-oriented issues that Trump highlighted](Â and how his actions stack up against his words.

Judge suppresses statements to police in capital murder trial, saying suspect wasn't fully advised of his rights
The capital murder trial of Michael Pennington started Tuesday [with key evidence that jurors won't get to hear.](
Pennington, 33, is accused of fatally stabbing Leasa Nixon Carroll, 58, after breaking into her McKinney home on the night of July 4, 2016.
Before testimony began, District Judge Mark Rusch ruled to suppress many of Pennington's statements captured on the police dash cam video at the scene.
Rusch said the McKinney officers did nothing wrong by reading the Miranda rights from a printed card supplied by their department. But nowhere on that card is the warning that the suspect has the right to end the interview at any time, the judge said.

The lessons learned from fallout of Baylor's sex assault scandal that now apply to Michigan State
Michigan State and Baylor played a memorable Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 2015, won by the Spartans in a crazy 42-41 comeback.
[Now the two schools are linked by something far more serious](Â â the specter of sexual assault, violence against women and serious questions about the schools' reaction.
Baylor is in recovery mode, having made major changes but still dealing with the aftermath of a scandal that rocked the university in 2015 and '16.
Michigan State is in the early stages with the spotlight focused squarely on the school after the sentencing last week of Larry Nassar, a former MSU athletic department doctor and USA Gymnastics physician accused of abusing his patients. The Nassar conviction has focused attention on instances of sexual assault and violence against women by football and men's basketball players.

Finally...
DART just hired another former board member â and it still looks bad
City columnist Robert Wilonsky writes:
It pays to be on the Dallas Area Rapid Transit board. Especially when you're [coming off the Dallas Area Rapid Transit board.](
On Monday, the transit agency welcomed a new part-time employee. His name is Jerry Christian, and until last summer he was one of Dallas' eight appointees to the DART board.Â
For the foreseeable future he will report to Michael Muhammad, DART's vice president of Diversity/Innovative Services. A DART spokesman said Monday that Christian is expected to work between 15 and 20 hours a week "helping us with civil rights outreach" and working with contractors to "help us make sure they're meeting their goals" when it comes to hiring minority- and women-owned businesses.
For this work, which sounds at once important and vague, Christian will be paid $35 an hour.
