January 01,  2018 By Holly Rusak Good morning and happy new year! Welcome to 2018. Here is a look at the top headlines as we start the day. 🌤️Weather: Mostly sunny and very cold. (Irwin Thompson/Staff Photographer) WEATHER More than 100 crashes, falls reported on an icy New Year's Eve [Numerous crashes were reported Sunday on area roads from Fort Worth to Denton to Frisco and Plano because of icy conditions](. MedStar, the ambulance service for Fort Worth and other cities, reported 118 crashes with injuries, including 21 rollovers between, and 17 falls related to ice between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday. A wind chill advisory is in effect for several counties, including Denton and Collin, through noon Monday. That's when wind chills are expected to drop below zero, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologist Patricia Sanchez said that with winds picking up and humidity going down, the slick roads could be less of a problem Monday. (Ashley Landis/Staff Photographer) FOOTBALL Five thoughts from the Dallas Cowboys' 6-0 win When you expect a game to be terrible, sometimes it surprises you and ends up at least entertaining. Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field was worse. Here are [Cowboys writer Jon Machota's top five thoughts](: The Dak Prescott to Dez Bryant combination continued to struggle. Blame the scheme or the players, either way it's the most important thing the Cowboys have to fix this offseason. Ezekiel Elliott needed 120 yards to record his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. He finished with 103 yards on 27 carries. There weren't as many of those long runs from the star back when he was on the field this season. Expect that to change next year with a healthy offensive line and a motivated running back. The Cowboys first-team defense held up their end of the bargain, shutting down the Philadelphia offense. Just not sure how impressive that is considering who was on the field. Read more of [Jon Machota’s thoughts on the end of the Cowboys season and where they go from here](. Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber speaks during a press conference following the death of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. Chief Jonathan Haber wrote to his staff in a memo: "Today, I am about to make the most difficult decision of my professional career. "Officer Oliver has been a friend, a co-worker, and fellow veteran; so it is with a heavy heart that I have to indefinitely suspend him and terminate his employment with the city," he wrote three days after Jordan's death. The memo is one of hundreds of emails the department sent or received in the days after Oliver fired his rifle on April 29, striking Jordan in the head. Jordan was riding in a car driving away from officers when Oliver fired multiple shots. Some emails, which included Twitter direct messages, were profanity-laced missives. Others offered kind words for the department. None specifically supported Oliver. In Fort Worth: [A woman and child were wounded in a shooting early Sunday](, police said. In Houston: Police say an [intoxicated and belligerent man at a downtown hotel was arrested]( after they found several guns and ammunition in his room. In Colorado: [Five deputies were shot, one fatally, after they responded to a report of a domestic disturbance]( Sunday morning in a suburb outside of Denver, officials said. Cidercade, Peticolas Brewing temporarily shut down right before New Year's Eve Two popular spots for drinking in Dallas — Cidercade and Peticolas Brewing Co. — are ending 2017 on a sour note: [The fire marshal shut them down right before New Year's Eve](. "Due to the rising popularity of the Cidercade and the increase in people coming through our doors, the City of Dallas is requiring some additional precautions to be put in place," reads a post on the Cidercade's Facebook page. "We were instructed to close immediately and remain closed until we upgrade our fire safety infrastructure." This news hits the Cidercade particularly hard, as they were gearing up for a New Year's Eve party for which tickets had just been sold out. Those tickets have now been refunded.
