August 17,  2017 [Solar eclipse]( In this photo taken by University of North Texas Observatory Superintendent Preston Starr, a powerful telescope makes it appear that a commercial jet has passed the moon and is headed for the sun. The UNT Observatory will have the same telescope projecting an image of the []solar eclipse on a large screen. The Observatory will be open for eclipse watchers from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 21. The Big Story Texas isn't worried by eclipse wiping out enough energy to power 120,000 homes When the sun dims dramatically Monday morning, that will be like an entire power plant unit shutting down for the Lone Star State's electricity grid. The much-anticipated solar eclipse will [wipe out about 600 megawatts]( worth of electricity generation from Texas' growing solar power industry, according to officials with ERCOT, which manages the Texas grid. That's enough energy to power 120,000 Texas homes during peak demand. Still, the celestial event -- which will be more dramatic north of Texas -- will cast barely a shadow over the state's electricity production. Solar energy makes up much less than 1 percent of electricity consumed by Texans. - [Jeff Mosier]( eclipse By the numbers Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimates the eclipse will cost employers $694 million in lost productivity. Here are facts about the eclipse and workplaces: 87,307,940 – Estimated number of workers at work during the eclipse. $7.95 – Cost of 20 minutes of unproductive time per worker due to the eclipse based on the average hourly wage of $23.86. 14.8 percent – Percentage of workers who work a shift other than the day shift, including evening, night, irregular shifts, or rotating shifts. 82.8 percent – Percentage of workers who work on an average weekday.
