Sublease office space is soaring in Dallas-Fort Worth. Should we be worried?
News that the volume of sublease office space available in the area is the highest in 15 years may come as a surprise.Â
[Sublease office space growth often signals a slowdown in the economy]( as companies go broke, shrink or leave town. When businesses close up shop, they can leave behind acres of empty office space, and they're still on the hook for the rent.
Currently, more than 80 acres of Dallas-area office sublease space are up for grabs, according to a new study by commercial property firm Colliers International. These sublease offices account for about 7 percent of all of what is sitting empty in the D-FW area, Colliers says.
The last time so much second-hand office space was available was back in 2003 when there was more than 4 million square feet of space for sublease.
