Resources to inform and support your activism [afsc logo](   SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2023 Weekend Reading [Speakers at a Stop Cop City press conference on Thursday, including AFSC’s Tim Franzen (far left).]( Photo: Stop Cop City coalition Dear Friend, Thank you to everyone who has donated to our coalition efforts to stop Cop City in Atlanta! If constructed, Cop City would be one of the largest militarized police training centers in the U.S.—all built by clear-cutting the city’s largest green space. AFSC is part of a coalition that worked to collect not only enough signatures to put Cop City to a vote —we nearly doubled the number required for a referendum! Now our coalition is working to hold the city to a fair process. [Read more from AFSC’s Tim Franzen.]( Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism: [Tell Congress: Support a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and all immigrants!:]( Earlier this week, a federal court again ruled that DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is unlawful. The decision dealt another blow to hundreds of thousands of people who came to the United States as children. It’s also a reminder that only legislation—not litigation—will provide permanent protections for DACA recipients and millions of other immigrants in the U.S. Urge Congress to take action today! [Border Patrol is once again holding migrants between border walls without access to basic services:]( The agency held  migrants in similarly inhumane conditions for weeks in May. It only stopped that practice after the Southern Border Communities Coalition—which includes AFSC—filed a federal complaint. Today, AFSC, partners, and community members are again providing emergency aid to migrants through the border barriers, as we did in May. That includes water, food, blankets, medicine, diapers, and menstrual pads. We plan to remain on site until Border Patrol stops holding migrants in the area. (KPBS) [Register for our next No Way to Treat a Child campaign webinar (Sept. 19, 12 noon ET/ 9 a.m. PT):]( In Palestine, students living under Israeli military occupation face daily challenges. In parts of the West Bank, schools are often located near Israeli military training zones, where Israeli forces fire live ammunition, tear gas, and other weapons. And in the past few years, Israeli authorities have ramped up efforts to demolish more Palestinian schools. In this webinar, we’ll discuss these issues as well as how we can advocate for Palestinians’ right to education. [Speak out for conscientious objectors in Ukraine and Russia:]( Thank you to everyone who contacted the Biden administration to support conscientious objectors in Ukraine, Russia, and around the world. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, people in both countries have faced repression, arrest, and detention for refusing to join the armed forces. If you haven’t already, please send a message today! [Listen to the “Quakers Today” podcast:]( AFSC is sponsoring season two of the “Quakers Today” podcast, a project of Friends Publishing Corporation. This latest episode, “A Barbie Hoax with a Message,” features actress-activist Daryl Hannah, who talks about a recent campaign to address the environmental damage of plastic waste. Friends were also asked to call in and respond to the question “When it comes to activism, do the ends justify the means?” Listen to hear more. (Friends Journal).
