But research has shown just how [normal]( it is to worry, feel lonely or have self-doubts or countless other forms of angst. Being human is hard, even if many people are adept at [making it look easy](. Two years ago, Aeon’s founders launched [Psyche]( with a mission to illuminate the human condition and to help people better address these universal challenges. Through our articles and [films]( our aim is to help people with acute mental and emotional problems, but also to share ways to flourish and to explore the more transcendent and creative aspects of life The internet is full of self-help advice, but much of it is superficial and of dubious quality, often released in a rush to tie in with fleeting news stories. Working at Psyche, I’m fortunate to have the time and space to collaborate with experts to help them share their deep knowhow in ways that you can truly make use of in your own life. One way we do this is by helping authors overcome the ‘[curse of expertise]( which can make it difficult for them to recall what it was like to not have their knowledge or experience. Being a generalist in psychology, I’m well placed to act as an intermediary, to take the perspective of you, our readers, and to help our authors anticipate your needs and the difficulties you might have following their advice. Many talk about making mental health care more accessible and equitable but Psyche is doing it, each and every week, by giving a platform for researchers and clinicians to share their expertise with the public in a rigorous but approachable way. This is the single best collection of mental health resources I know. Nick Wignall, clinical psychologist at the Cognitive Behavioral Institute of Albuquerque. #[I’d like to donate]( We’ve published Guides of lasting value by clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, philosophers, social workers and others on diverse topics that concern our turbulent inner lives, such as [how to stop overthinking]( [how to take things less personally]( and [how to calm stormy emotions](. Other Guides address everyday challenges, such as [how to make friends]( [read more books]( or [think more clearly](. A key ingredient for wellbeing is to expand one’s mind, and we have also published many Guides that celebrate the joys of learning: for example, on [making music]( or [planning a novel](. Something else that makes Psyche distinct is our commitment to pluralism and diverse perspectives, as reflected in our Guides but also in our more frequent Ideas. Where else would you find advice on parenting that’s [grounded in Chinese philosophy]( lessons on technology [from the Amish]( or insights into happiness from [ancient Indian metaphysics]( We also explore and celebrate the richness of human experience, with first-hand accounts on [deafness]( [mental health difficulties]( [parenthood]( [amnesia]( [therapy]( [unrequited love]( [prostitution]( [reverie]( and much, much more. There are few, if any, publications out there which match Aeonâs ability to integrate the raw, hard findings of psychological and cognitive science with the slightly trickier issue of applying them, meaningfully and effectively, to the challenges of everyday life. Kevin Dutton, Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Adelaide As someone trained in psychology and neuroscience, I bring sceptical instincts to my editorial work, but I’m not wedded to any particular school of thought or therapeutic modality. I believe in the importance of evidence, but I interpret that broadly – whether in the form of hard data or lived wisdom. So I’ve found a natural home here at Psyche where we pursue the truth through a synergy of perspectives, and by marrying rigour with open-mindedness. Every working day I learn something new from our authors, and I hope that you too continue to feel supported and inspired by our magazines as you as navigate the pain and joys that this life brings. Your support makes a difference #[I’d like to donate]( Christian Jarrett
