In today's newsletter: - The [consequences of the deep cold]( spreading over Southcentral Alaska began showing by this morning as utilities grappled with heavy demand, power outages and burst sewer pipes. - The roof of an Anchorage[commercial building partially collapsed]( less than a day after municipal officials mailed out more than 1,000 warnings to owners that their buildings could be at risk. - The Alaska Senate advanced legislation that would [reestablish a public-sector pension]( in an effort to address significant challenges with the recruitment and retention of public employees and teachers. The bears that live in the Kodiak Archipelago are a unique subset of Alaska brown bears. Two Kodiak cubs were recently found a very, very long way from home: [roaming a rural road]( in the Florida Panhandle. And the encounter got even stranger when they tried to play with the responding sheriff’s deputy.
