A storm system will bring a mix of snow and rain to Southcentral Alaska early Wednesday after a storm late Monday dropped snow throughout the region.Anchorage received about 4 inches of snow by Tuesday morning, said National Weather Service meteorologist Shaun Baines. It was drizzling in the city Tuesday morning, which Baines said left a hard crust over the snow. The drizzle was expected to continue until midday, and Baines said more snow could mix in.Hatcher Pass in Mat-Su received 6 inches of new snow by early Tuesday, the Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center reported. The new snow increased avalanche danger and the center said conditions will become worse through the next few days as additional storms move through. Hatcher Pass Road remained closed Tuesday at Mile 14, near the Gold Mint parking lot.Driving conditions in and north of Anchorage were considered difficult Tuesday morning, with the Department of Transportation saying there was snow on roads, blowing snow and icy patches. The next storm system is expected to move into the region from the Pacific around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Baines said. The Kenai Peninsula is expected to get rain and the Matanuska and Susitna valleys will get snow, according to Baines. Anchorage will likely get a mix, with 2 inches or less of snow, Baines said.“So there’s going to be some snow, maybe a little freezing rain and at some point for this we’re going to be above freezing with just plain rain,” Baines said of Anchorage. “So it’s going to be a mess.”The heaviest precipitation is expected to fall during the morning commute Wednesday, he said. Driving conditions are expected to be difficult. The Matanuska Valley is forecast to get 4 to 7 inches of snow, according to a winter weather advisory that remains in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday. The Susitna Valley could get 3 to 9 inches.Temperatures in Anchorage are expected to reach 34 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday and 31 degrees on Thursday. Similar temperatures are forecast for Palmer and Wasilla.Near Seward, high temperatures are forecast to be in the high to mid 30s through the end of the week.Another storm system is expected to move into Southcentral Alaska on Thursday afternoon or evening, Baines said. It’s forecast to be colder, which Baines said will result in mainly snow, although the forecast will likely change as the system moves closer. Email not displaying correctly?
