In a quiet phase and reacting to recent warming, the Black Rapids Glacier in the Alaska Range is now a shrinking 26-mile-long tongue of ice. But scientists studying the glacier believe it has surged four times since the year 1400, drastically changing the surrounding landscape, says science writer Ned Rozell.
