The Machine of Misery

Hey hey.  I just want to resend this email from a few months ago...  Because I have a good feeling it may resonate with you as we move on to 2021.  I know there's a lot of people around the world who feel stuck, uncertain and alone because of the pandemic.  And I get that it can put you into a spiral of hopelessness.  But what's not okay for me is seeing people just sitting around…  Hoping and wishing that a guardian angel would pluck them out of their desperate situation.  Perhaps they're in a job where they have to deal with co-workers and a boss who doesn't appreciate them.  And instead of rising up the company or finding a better work culture someplace else...  What do they do?  They complain endlessly to their friends about how miserable they are in that job.  And then their friends complain to each other about how miserable they are in their job.  Until it becomes this MACHINE OF MISERY...  Where the friends feed off of each other's misery and then feed it back to each other and on and on.  As they say, "Misery loves company" right?  And instead of doing anything about their "miserable" situation...  They start to FALL IN LOVE with their misery.  Now, I know you might be thinking…  "Joel, how could you say that?"  And I know it sounds crazy. But it's true.  What I've learnt is that people can actually FALL IN LOVE with their own misery...  Because it's COMFORTABLE.  It's more comfortable to complain to your friends about how much you hate your boss then it is to ask yourself in that moment…  "What can I do to change my situation around?"  And you wanna know the most dangerous part about this?  Everyday, you're hoping and wishing something changes and you're not taking back control of your life...  You slowly start to lose parts of who you are.  It's like holding an ice block near a heater.  Just like how the ice is slowly melting away the longer it stays in the heater...  Your confidence and sense of power slowly starts to melt away…  The longer you wait for a guardian angel to pluck you out of your situation.  And to add more fire to that soul-crushing heater...  You start to make silly decisions like…  Doing things for the approval of others instead of focusing on what you want to do...  Or desperately taking on soul-crushing business opportunities just to make money…  Even though your soul is screaming at you not to do it.  In other words…  You start to betray yourself.  Now, here's the good news.  We don't know what will happen EXTERNALLY.  But we get to choose how we respond to our situations INTERNALLY.  In other words…  No matter what crisis, recession or pandemic you're in…  No matter how much you hate your job right now…  Understand that you get to CHOOSE to take yourself out of the MACHINE OF MISERY...  And do whatever is necessary to TAKE BACK CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.  You get to build yourself up as a LEADER that can withstand even the toughest of times.  Imagine your future kids seeing you WIN and all they can say is...  "Wow, my mommy/daddy is a gangsta.
