{NAME} — Donald Trump is once again back on the road, and during a rally this weekend he told a crowd of thousands in Ohio that he thinks I’m “the worst.” Look, I’ve got some pretty thick skin after years of being personally vilified and attacked by the former president and his allies at Fox News. But the substance of his rally was far more concerning than anything he had to say about me. Trump was in Ohio to stoke his own political ego, of course. But he was also there to shepherd his own Big Lie. He rallied for a Republican primary challenger to one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him for inciting the January 6 attack on the Capitol. He’s vowed to personally campaign against every last one of them – and his campaign has now begun. In authoritarian countries, we would refer to this as a purge. And that is exactly what is happening here. Because there is no room left in the Republican Party for those with the integrity and independence to tell the American people the truth. Instead, Trump’s GOP has become an anti-truth, anti-democratic, authoritarian cult that depends on repeating the Big Lie to their millions of supporters. But they’re not just going after disloyal Republicans — Trump vowed to take back the House, the Senate, and the White House. And the sad truth is, history is on his side. Democrats can buck the trend, but it won’t be easy to maintain control of either chamber — the incumbent president’s party almost always loses seats in the first midterm elections. With a 4-seat House majority and just a single seat in the Senate, we have zero margin for error. If Trump’s GOP is able to win back power, I fear our democracy will not be able to withstand their continued assault. This is where you come in, {NAME}. In 2018 and 2020, massive grassroots energy propelled Democrats to take the House, Senate, and White House for the first time in a decade. We can’t let all that progress be erased. Not now. Not ever. [We have an ambitious goal of generating 65,000 contributions before Wednesday’s end-of-quarter FEC deadline. We need every resource possible to defend our House majority from the attacks still to come from Trump and his cronies.
