{NAME} — The state of today’s Republican Party is grim. If you tell the truth, you’re out. If you want to get to the bottom of the events of January 6, you’re ostracized. If you want to work with Democrats on anything, you’re told to take a hike. Instead, they're praising and pushing lies – especially the Big Lie – and lifting up the most extreme voices. They’re fighting against any progress we try to make in the Capitol – on COVID, on helping working families, or even getting the economy back on track. This is what happens when you allow a cancer to fester in a political party. And it doesn’t stop in the halls of Congress. It seeps into the real world, with real-world consequences. We see the real-world consequences in the “recount” happening in Arizona right now. If you haven’t had the time to focus on this, I don’t blame you. Months after votes were tallied and results certified, Republicans in Arizona are working overtime to support Trump’s Big Lie. Using millions in taxpayer money, the Republican-controlled Arizona State Legislature hired an outside company – actually named, and I’m not making this up, Cyber Ninjas – to conduct an audit into the election results in the state. They’ve had to walk back claims amplified by Trump, like deleted databases that were in fact not deleted. And they’ve spent time looking for bamboo-based paper ballots sent from Asia. Seriously. The firm has never completed an election audit before, and it’s clear why they were hired. The CEO of “Cyber Ninjas” spread “Stop the Steal” conspiracies in the wake of the election. And get this – Arizona's Secretary of State announced that Maricopa County, their largest county, will need to replace all of its voting machines because their security was permanently compromised by the audit. For clarification, a private firm that thinks the election was stolen, with no experience auditing elections, was given unsupervised unchecked access, with no bipartisan observers, and somehow they managed to compromise the voting machines. Go figure. This sham is the logical end of the GOP’s devolution into a conspiracy-driven, Donald Trump-loving cult. And we all must look at it as a threat to our continuing democracy. As much as it feels like a dystopian joke – it’s not. This is as serious as it can be. That’s why we need to prepare for 2022 – right now. In Arizona, we will have multiple Democratic House seats that Republicans are targeting, and Senator Mark Kelly is up for reelection in what is likely to be the closest Senate race in the entire country. And with Republicans pushing lie after lie after lie, we need to start right now. Republican grassroots donors will continue to fuel politicians who push Trump’s Big Lie. And Republican “leaders” like Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell will continue to oppose any progress so they can take back the Congress.
