That’s why when Bill Maher on Friday asked Adam (in a socially distanced way!) how to strengthen our democracy and update the Constitution after Trump was gone, Adam answered clearly: “I would favor doing away with the Electoral College system.” This antiquated system of determining the winner of our presidential elections is as outdated as it is deeply flawed. Since 2000, two winners of the popular vote — both Democratic candidates — lost the presidential election due to the Electoral College. And Donald Trump’s chances at reelection depend on eeking out another Electoral College victory, while losing the popular vote by millions. There’s something fundamentally wrong with the fact that a person who achieves less votes can go on to win and govern 330 million Americans. There is a growing movement across the country to replace the Electoral College with a national popular vote. In the new system, the winner would be the one who gets the most votes.
