Thoughts on Iran

{NAME}, As I’m sure you’ve seen in the news, the past week has seen a dramatic escalation of hostilities between the United States and Iran. And while we seem to have entered a period of relative calm, this is only the latest flare up that has brought us perilously close to a war. President Trump seems to operate entirely by impulse, and killing Qassem Suleimani, the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was the latest example of conducting high-stakes foreign policy without a plan. Suleimani was a malign force in the Middle East who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American service members, and thousands of civilians across the region, but the President hasn’t made the case for how taking him out makes us safer. Iran’s response was all too predictable, with missiles fired at bases in Iraq housing U.S. forces. Thankfully, no American lives were lost, but the threat remains: this president is putting our service members, diplomats and innocent civilians in harm’s way with his impulsive decision-making and dangerous lack of foreign policy strategy, and it’s time for Congress to step in. The Constitution gives Congress — and only Congress — the power to declare war. A decision which could imperil so many should not be left to the whims of one impulsive man.
