On September 20, 1958, a 29 year old Martin Luther King was signing copies of his book ‘Stride Towards Freedom’ in Blumsteins department store. The book described how he and 50,000 others fought for civil rights with nonviolent resistance. What was supposed to be a lighthearted book signing event took a dark turn. As King greeted his fan, a 42 year old woman named Izola Curry approached and asked if it was really him. When King replied "yes", she said, "I’ve been looking for you for five years". Then she plunged a letter opener deep into his chest. Police arrived to find him stunned with the letter opener’s ivory handle still protruding just below his collar. The blade was very close to his heart so the officer warned him, "don’t sneeze. Don’t even speak". King was rushed into the hospital but after a dangerous operation, he survived. Izola Curry, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, would spend the rest of her life in mental institutions. Many people in this situation would have expressed their anger and even hatred for the 46 year old woman. But what’s so amazing about King was that he did the complete opposite. He quickly let go of his offense and to the surprise of many, he graciously offered his forgiveness to her. This ties into how King’s nonviolent resistance movement was so successful… And how he became one of the most influential leaders in history. He was relentlessly attacked by segregationists, white supremacists and even his own race at times. Yet, time and time again, his philosophy of love was far stronger than his bitterness, anger and hate that would have tormented so many people. In fact, this is how he described his philosophy... "Fear is mastered through love. Hate is rooted in fear, and the only cure for fear-hate is love. Is not fear one of the major causes of war? We say that war is a consequence of hate, but close scrutiny reveals this sequence; first fear, then hate, then war, and finally deeper hatred. We are afraid of the superiority of other people, of failure, and of the scorn of disapproval of those whose opinions we most value. Envy, jealousy, a lack of self confidence, a feeling of insecurity, and a haunting sense of inferiority are all rooted in fear. Is there a cure for these annoying fears that pervert our personal lives? Yes, a deep and abiding commitment to the way of love. "Perfect love casteth out fear." Hatred and bitterness can never cure the disease of fear; only love can do that." Just...Wow! I get goosebumps after reading that. King didn’t just believe in his philosophy of love. He had fully embodied his philosophy. It was a part of him. Because he fully embodied and was fully certain within himself, every speech he did, every book he wrote, every word he said… Was expressed with absolute certainty. This is why King had become one of the most influential leaders in history and a household name. Certainty is the base of all transformations.
