Do you feel significant? (part 3)

"If I hold a gun to your head, how significant am I?" These were the words spoken by Tony Robbins when he was talking about significance. And it’s true, isn’t it? If someone held a gun to you, you wouldn’t be thinking of anyone else except for them. They can’t take your mind or your spirit, but they can take your body with a single gunshot. Bottomline: Everyone wants to feel seen, heard and understood. I don’t care whether you’re introverted… Or whether you think… "I don’t need love" "I’m self empowered" "I’m independent" I hear these justifications all the time. But the need to feel significant is a basic human desire that we all have. This is why gang violence is crazy. You have all these young kids running around with guns trying to be somebody. When I worked in the music industry over a decade ago… I saw all these rappers and artists at 30, 40 years old bragging about their fancy cars, watches, etc. It was all about trying to be somebody in such an unhealthy way. Something happened when they were younger (probably during their teenage years) when they had this desperate need for significance. When we’re younger, we determine parts of ourselves that we suppress based on what is accepted and what is NOT. It can happen with religion, sexuality, desires, worldviews. And like I said in yesterday’s email… I had an identity crisis throughout my childhood. I wanted to be a good church boy so my parents would love me… But at the same time, I didn’t want to be a "goody-two-shoes" with my school friends or else I’d be made fun of. So I became a chameleon so I could be accepted in both groups. And I ended up not knowing who I was… Leading me to a string of bad relationships like my ex-wife cheating on me. I suppressed the "dark" parts of myself that were not accepted in my communities so I could feel significant. Even as I was building the Addicted2Success website, I was still growing past this identity crisis. Guaranteed, if I had never learned to INTEGRATE both my "light" side and my "Dark" side, I would never have become an Influential Coach. And even if I was a coach, I would still feel like I wasn’t good enough to continue to be one. Because your growth as a coach or as a leader depends on how whole you have become. Emotions and personalities that you suppress become DESTRUCTIVE. They lead you to making decisions you regret like getting into a car crash after exploding in a fit of rage because you suppressed your anger for too long… Or me dating a series of drug addicted, rebellious girls in the past. When I coach aspiring coaches, I focus on turning their suppressed emotions from an enemy that holds them back into an ally that propels them towards their vision. Because becoming a fully authentic transformational leader that taps into their god-given gifts everyday is the best way to feel significant.
