a story about the negative self-talk that is all too common among business owners. Hey hey. Hope you’ve been doing amazing in this month of June so far. I want to tell you a story about the negative self-talk that is all too common among business owners. See, there was a business owner named Greg who worked 8-9 hours a day in his day job. When he comes home, he has dinner with his wife. And then immediately sits down on his computer to build his online business. He is hyper focused from 7pm to 12am. On weekends, he spends about 8-12 hours working on it. Some days he gets everything done. But on other days, he sits on his desk and gets pulled into the distraction loop. Instead of being hyper-focused on his task, he browses around the internet and he struggles to even get one task done. It’s like an invisible force has been pushing him away. And whenever he has a day where he didn’t get much done, he gets angry. He lashes out, and beats himself up for not getting as much done. Weeks go by. He’s still stuck in that same cycle of having days where he gets a lot done… Followed by days where he barely gets anything done which made him angry. One day, he realized that if nothing changes then he’ll continue to be stuck in this distraction loop. So instead of getting angry, he decided to FORGIVE himself. He told himself that it was okay to have days where you're not producing. For 1-2 days, he gave himself permission to step away from all his devices. He played board games with his kids and watched tv with his wife without feeling the obligation to get work done. Ironically when he did this, he started to get back into hyper focus even faster. He produced so much more in the next 2-3 days following those rest days. As Nelson Mandela says… "Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for it to kill your enemy" One of the things I talk about with coaches is the fact that guilt, shame and resentment actually stops you from becoming an amazing coach. Blaming yourself or others for not getting enough done or for mistakes that were made, is like purposely draining your own battery. You become so focused on the failures that you get blinded to the one thing that actually matters…COMING UP WITH SOLUTIONS! But when you focus on self-love, you recharge your own batteries so you have the energy to solve problems. Part of coaching clients is knowing how to bring them from SELF-BLAME to SELF-LOVE so they can get to their results faster. I've had clients who forgave themselves for past mistakes they made and as a result, their business exploded. If you’re someone who beats themselves up, then I challenge you to be on your own team instead and then see the results. Hope this email gave you some added perspective. God Bless! . .
