What is an Exponential Entrepreneur? Well, before I get into that I need to differentiate what an entrepreneur really is vs. a proprietor (or just a business owner) because there's a myth, mistake, misconception and delusion out there. A lot of people believe themselves to be entrepreneurs, and they really are NOT. If you want to be an Exponential Entrepreneur you better first become an entrepreneur and then leverage that up. So let me try to define what a true entrepreneur is vs. a business owner or proprietor. The reference examples I'll use below are ones that were originally introduced by the famed business consultant who's now deceased (considered one of the finest business minds that ever lived) -- Peter Drucker. Peter Drucker said the majority of people in small/medium business are proprietors NOT entrepreneurs. A proprietor is somebody who creates something with an intention to be pretty mediocre and average. Someone who literally just siphons commerce out of a market or an audience or a media -- but really not by doing anything noteworthy or distinctive or particularly more valuable than any other choice out there. The analogy and the example he used was a delicatessen owner. He said a proprietor finds a location where there's a lot of other food or fast food so they get a jet stream of demand. Then they create a clean facility, a decent name, attractive signage, you walk in and people are cleanly attired and in uniform, they are pleasant, the deli is clean, it might be loaded with fresh meat, cheeses and breads, and everything about it is very UN-extraordinary, but serviceable. There's nothing really special or unique about the transaction, the experience, the food, or the people -- but they're not below average -- they’re just average! They’re a commodity. On the other hand... An entrepreneur by its definition, is a man or woman who has figured out how to add SUPREME value, advantage, benefit, enhancement, more protection to the recipient, in this case -- the client or buyer. In the case of an entrepreneurial deli owner, it would be someone who has methodically and strategically and experientially thought through what the transaction should be like for the optimum experience of the target buyer. It starts with outrageous signage and a look on the outside that gets your visual attention. It might start with pumping the most delectable aromas out from the best elements of the deli -- whether it's fresh baked bread, certain kinds of cheeses or meats, certain kinds of salads -- things that would evoke desire and make your taste buds start watering before you ever come in. When you walk in -- they would probably have very unique and visually memorable and very impressive, not necessarily outrageous -- but very impactful looking outfits (not uniforms), outfits! They would have ENORMOUSLY engaging and charismatic personalities in every interface area. They would be making sandwiches that were OUTRAGEOUS, thick and with outrageous bread, (they wouldn't be serving any bread that was boring). When they chose bread from the baker, maybe they paid a bit more -- but the bread was crusty and delectable (if that's what it was supposed to be) -- and it might be not just white bread, but white bread with olives infused... And the cheese's they would be serving would not be bland cheeses that were tasteless, they would be enormously delectable. The way it would be served and the way it would be presented would be visually, REALLY cool. The setting would be not just clean and private, but very comfortably inviting. The servers would be memorable, joyous, fun, charismatic, and effervescent. In essence -- very, very, VERY memorable. And the experience would be something that when you left -- YOU COULDN’T WAIT to come back, and you couldn't wait to tell other people! So now let me ask you a question Friend... Are you a proprietor or are you an entrepreneur? If you are not an entrepreneur “perse” in what you're doing, the first thing is to realign your thinking and decide you better move from proprietor to entrepreneur. - You better figure out how to add a lot more experiential value. - You better develop a lot more consequential thinking of what the experience you offer can be like. - You better look around you in your business world and see other kinds of providers of other kinds of products or services that are TRUE entrepreneurs. And then when you deal with them -- it's memorable, it's experientially outrageous, and see how you can really adapt/adopt and appropriate those kinds of activities, thinking, and install a variation in your business. Doing so will help you get closer to becoming what I call an Exponential Entrepreneur. Someone who gets every element of their business performing at exponential. And that’s just scratching the surface. Jay PS. If you want to learn how to start operating as an Exponential Entrepreneur and want a fast-track way to relook at your entire business (past, current, and future) and challenge yourself to stop operating as a proprietor (if that’s what you’re doing) -- [secure your seat in my new short-course primer]( on Tuesday, October 12th.
