[U.S. Capitol]( AARP statement on U.S. Capitol attack Our nation’s division reached a fever pitch last week when insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol. Fueled by misinformation, rioters caused extensive damage to one of our nation’s most cherished institutions, threatened the lives and well-being of duly elected lawmakers — and their actions led to the deaths of five people. The attack also distracted from the need to focus on the government-led response that is essential for saving lives and solving the problems related to COVID-19. The perpetrators of this attack must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law — but it can’t end there. In order for our nation to heal, we must find ways to work through this incivility, halt misinformation, and find a shared path forward. Our country has many pressing problems to solve, and constructive debate is the only way to solve them. Read AARP’s complete statement on the shameful events of January 6. In the four-week period ending December 20, about one in 10 residents was diagnosed with the coronavirus, and nearly nine in 10 nursing homes reported that at least one staff member was diagnosed. The national rates of COVID cases and deaths in these facilities have approximately quadrupled in the last three months. “Almost a year into the pandemic, nursing home residents and staff remain sitting ducks for the coronavirus. Our latest analysis shows that the crisis has moved beyond regional spikes to encompass every state in the continental U.S.” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer. “Action must be taken immediately to stop this national tragedy.” [Learn more about how the pandemic is affecting nursing homes by checking out the Dashboard](.
