[AARP Advocacy Alert] Dear {NAME} COVID-19 is raging like wildfire across the country, putting seniors living in nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care facilities in grave danger. Already, 56,000 have died from the virus in only 4 months. This is a national tragedy! Time is running out for Congress to take bipartisan action to protect seniors. [Contact your U.S. Senators and Representative]( and tell them to save seniors’ lives before they go on recess in August – only 2 weeks away. [Image of Woman in Nursing Home] AARP and families of seniors living in nursing homes and long-term care facilities demand action, and [we need Congress to enact a five-point plan]( to require: - Regular, ongoing testing and adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) - Transparency focused on daily, public reporting of cases and deaths in facilities; communication with families about discharges and transfers; and funding accountability - Access to facilitated virtual visitation, even when states begins allowing in-person visits again - Better care for residents through adequate staffing, oversight, and access to in-person formal advocates, called long-term care ombudsmen - No immunity for long-term care facilities related to COVID-19 It’s been a long four months since COVID-19 first struck nursing homes—killing 56,000—and Congress still hasn’t done enough to stop the deaths.
