“Speculation is a loser's game. Because of the costs, it has to be a loser's game.” [Unsubscribe]( [Wiggin Sessions] June 11, 2022 I Cannot Specify This Enough “Speculation is a loser's game. Because of the costs, it has to be a loser's game.” — John Bogle [Addison Wiggin]Dear Reader, What if you could own a casino and go fishing every day? For real… My long-time friend Alex Green, Chief Investment Strategist of the Oxford Club shows how achievable this is. That is, with the correct understanding of investing in the markets. Even during stormy market conditions. "Isn't the stock market just a big casino?" Alex explains what he hears frequently from new investors. “And I go, well, it can be, if you want to buy a stock at 10:00 AM and sell it at 10:30. You're treating it like a casino, but you can be a casino owner and collect all those chips if you want to take a longer term approach. In fact, casino stocks have been one of the best performing sectors of the market over the decades.” This casino approach isn’t an investment. It’s a speculation. A gamble. You can win big or lose big. According to Alex there is a time for this. But there is an important distinction which makes all the difference. Alex explains how you can own the casino while fishing everyday. I tell people, let's just start by defining our terms. Investment is long term and it means you don't obsess over the short term ups and downs in the markets, or even whether we're in a bull market or bear market, except to the extent that you want to add money while shares are cheap, whether you're doing it through ETFs or mutual funds. Trading is a short term oriented activity. You're not ignoring the short terms in the market. You're trying to take advantage of them. And speculation is also short term, but you're taking a higher level of risk. And so I put things like penny stocks and options and things that can potentially go to zero. And I call those no tier investments. If you want to take the chance of earning 300, 400, 500% returns, as we've often done in these various trading services, that's great, but also understand that you are speculating. And if you're going to gamble, which is something of what speculation is, you're going to have things that just don't work out. Whereas with the gone fishing portfolio, yeah, we can have a down year, but you never have to apologize for the way your portfolio worked out over the long term because it's a long term conservative investment strategy and there's more conservative trading strategies and there's more conservative ways to speculate as well. But I think everybody who's acting on our advice needs to understand this is an investment. This is a trading strategy and this is speculation. And my own conviction is you should do them in separate portfolios, separate accounts. You shouldn't have your trading ideas in your long term portfolio and you shouldn't be trading your long term ideas and you shouldn't have a trade that goes wrong and go, oh, well, it's just a long term investment because now all you're doing is rationalizing. You've left your discipline behind. You're making excuses and it's not likely to work out. [Click here to learn more]( Be sure to watch my interview with discussion with Alex.
