[Mallory McMorrow]( [Friends – By the end of the year, as many as 26 states will have either banned abortion outright (in some states, making no exceptions for rape or incest) or gutted access to the point it’s impossible to obtain.]( As a state senator here in Michigan – where only thanks to a temporary court order blocking a 1931 state law from taking effect, abortion would be banned statewide – I know firsthand that state legislatures are the front lines in the new war for abortion access. Here and in many states, the outcome of the election this November will determine whether abortion is outlawed for tens of millions of women. Republican-controlled state legislatures are responsible for keeping old laws on the books, ‘trigger laws’ that resulted in abortion becoming illegal after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, and numerous other laws designed to gut our rights and freedoms. But Democratic state legislatures can reverse these bans and restrictions, expand access to care, and reign in extreme GOP Governors like Ron DeSantis, Greg Abbott, and Brian Kemp.
