It was the first time in more than two centuries that the Capitol defenses were breached and overrun. Armed with firearms and explosive devices, insurrectionists temporarily delayed the certification of the 2020 election and occupied the Capitol, looting and destroying offices, confidential Congressional materials, and property. Moments prior, Donald Trump urged his supporters to storm the Capitol and “Go Wild.” After learning that the Capitol was occupied, he released a video doubling down on promoting conspiracy theories about the election and went on to praise the insurrectionists, telling them “Love you. You’re very special.” Armed insurrectionists, at one point, were one room away from reaching where U.S. Senators were hiding and an armed standoff occurred on the floor of the House of Representatives. Members of the House and their aides were using overturned tables and desks to take cover. Donald Trump made his comments with full knowledge of this. He then denied requests by District of Columbia officials to send in the National Guard to restore law and order, a decision that was later reversed. Trump continues to argue that the election was rigged. He previously ordered election officials to try to rig the election. He then incited a coup attempt that had the potential to result in the mass slaughtering of elected officials and civilians by insurrectionists armed with firearms and explosive devices. Additionally, it is unclear if he will use the Office of the President to then pardon those who are charged for their role in this attempted coup. It is impossible to overstate the threat that Donald Trump represents to our democracy, nor the scale that he has abdicated his responsibility to protect the American people, the rule of law, and our democracy.
