That might not sound like much but as a practicing physician serving in the New Jersey State House running for Congress for the first time (with Election Day just 5 days away) it is a gift. And with it, I wanted to share with you my final pitch and why I decided to run in the first place . My parents instilled in me the importance of giving back to your community and that is what has guided my life since a young age. It’s why I pursued a career in medicine: To take care of my community and to do my best to improve and save lives. It’s why I served in the Air Force where I worked my way up to be an Assistant Director of the primary care clinic at McGuire Air Force Base and later worked as clinical professor to teach the next generation of doctors. It’s what inspired me to run for local office where I championed legislation to make healthcare more accessible, protect our environment, improve our public schools, and make our communities safer. I didn’t imagine I would run for Congress: But when I look around at what is happening in our country with attacks on our fundamental freedoms, our democratic institutions, and the ability for honest folks to achieve the American dream, I felt that same call to serve I’ve felt before. I’m not your typical candidate. In fact, in our country’s nearly 250 year history there has never been a Black doctor elected with full voting privileges in Congress. The historic nature of our campaign isn’t lost on me. But I promise you, I’m not running to make history: I’m running to serve the best interests of your family and this beautiful country we call home.
