We profile cover artist Mickalene Thomas and Kolkata chronicler Soham Gupta, and include an intimate studio visit with Nadav Kander – penned and pictured by Alice Zoo. We’re also sharing some content online before the magazine lands in the BJP shop: first an interview with Paul Sng, whose documentary Tish blends family testimony and reenactment with the South Shields photographer’s most powerful images. We’re in an unusual position in our Agenda section, with one of the featured events cancelled since the magazine was printed and distributed. The 2024 Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie was due to launch in March, curated by Shahidul Alam, Munem Wasif and Tanzim Wahab. But in response to Alam’s Facebook activity following Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israeli civilians on 07 October, the organisers have decided not to proceed. Below, BJP editor Diane Smyth reports on the details of the decision, and the curators' response. Lastly, BJP is sad to learn of the passing of Elliott Erwitt, a giant of Magnum and the golden age of magazine photography. Our writer Sarah Moroz visited his final retrospective in Paris earlier this year. “Erwitt’s work is characterised by a certain buoyant vision, one that transcends any single location or era,” she wrote. “His tone remains lively whether photographing life and livelihoods in Birmingham, England; Valdés, Argentina; or Częstochowa, Poland.” We’re resharing the piece online to mark his legacy. ‘With a documentary, you’re beholden to the truth’: Director Paul Sng on telling Tish’s story How do you make a documentary about a documentarian?
