The conversations this gathering creates are as useful in taking the industryâs temperature as any award-winning book. Itâs difficult to give every project the attention it deserves, so zooming out can often help to process the sheer volume of photography on display. On Friday, Centre Culturel Irlandais hosted Critical Beans, where curators from PhotoIreland and FOMU Antwerp discussed the state of art criticism. We live in an increasingly atomised informational world, guest Lucy Soutter explained: art or ideas from any historical period are now up for grabs in universities and institutions, giving artists huge creative freedom. For critics and curators, the challenge is to refresh the languages and methods we use to interpret this overloaded landscape, without reproducing the biases of the past. âWeâre all subject to power, but what do we do with the power that we have?â asked Duncan Wooldridge. When the entire industry descends on one city, the pairâs Global Photographies Network is an intriguing experiment in decentralisation. Next door, Kate Nolanâs Lacuna tells the story of the Irish border through its young people, mixing 100 yearsâ worth of archival material â some of it British propaganda â with new portraits. One of our favourite booths this year appears in Paris Photoâs new digital section â Düsseldorfâs Kunst & Denker showing works by Louisa Clement. Clement's images depict a mannequin of herself which she left in a gallery; visitors abused the mannequin to a degree that's surprising, until you remember Yoko Ono and Marina AbramoviÄ's experiments in similar territory. © Kate Nolan © Louisa Clement Curiosa section highlights include Hoda Afshar and Felipe Romero Beltrán, both already making waves in institutions with politically engaged, aesthetically considered work. The relatively unknown Jonathan Rosic's delicate Indian ink drawings jump off the wall at Archiraar Gallery; inspired by a vast collection of vernacular photography (some of which is also on show) he omits details of the originals in order to leave behind gestures of care or display. At PhotoSaintGermainâs takeover of the legendary Hotel La Louisiane, the ramshackle bedrooms are spruced up with a strong selection of contemporary photography. Nikola Mihov's photographs of his mother's last months transform chambre 31 into a care home, while Bérangère Fromont's images of women couples are given an extra intimacy by their close proximity to beds. A pleasing harmony of content and context. © Jonathan Rosic COMING SOON | The Portrait Issue Issue #7916 This issue will reach our Print Subscribers and Full Access Members soon Our annual Portrait issue is just around the corner, with artists, writers and curators bringing the freshest perspectives to this most storied photography format.
