Curator Osei Bonsu walked us through the exhibition, sharing his personal insights and highlights, alongside important historical context on the show’s works. “Probably the most dominant narrative that exists in relation to African photography is that Africa is often constructed through a lens – the idealistic, the exoticisation of its peoples and landscapes,” he told us. “The intention for this exhibition is to address the ways in which artists are countering those fixed narratives, but also using photography as a tool to activate discussions around the telling of history.” This week [we published Bonsu’s reflections in his own words]( so you can enjoy a tour of your own. Elsewhere we shared the final instalment of a five-part series exploring the work of artists who, having become frustrated with the medium’s conventions, have been breaking photography’s rules. This week [we met Gareth Phillips]( whose practice focuses on disrupting conventions around photographic display and dissemination – especially the photobook format. Finally, and a little further afield, Mounir Raji’s new exhibition The holiday, where every day is a perfect day, has been very much on our radar. Produced for the 2023 edition of Rijksmuseum’s annual photography commission, Document Netherlands, Raji’s images offer a utopian, picture-postcard vision of life on board the cruise ship, while also highlighting the mechanisms that underlie tourism. The exhibition is [on show now]( until 14 January 2024. Curator Osei Bonsu walks us through Tate Modern’s new African photography show A World in Common presents 36 artists using photography to reimagine Africa’s place in the world. Here, Bonsu shares his highlights, insights and the show’s historical contexts.
