Originally, tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods were meant to go up from 25% to 30% today. But in return for President Trump postponing this raise, China agreed to buy between $40 billion and $50 billion of American agricultural products. Any significant progress on key issues like intellectual property protection in China and access to markets have been postponed until later (despite small concessions and some serious lip service). So the trade dispute has once again been kicked down the road, easing concerns on Friday. But with campaigning for the 2020 U.S. presidential election heating up, traders are concerned. China could well try to gain the upper hand by using Trump's desire to have a deal to show voters before the election. Look for more signs of China's negotiating strategy this week. The negotiating table isn't the only place China is toughening its stance. A rapid military buildup in the South China Sea has China believing they have the upper hand, even against the might of the U.S. Navy. [You have to see this footage....]( - Earnings #1: The Charles Schwab Corp. (SCHW) reports on Tuesday before the open. As we talked about last week, brokers are moving quickly to reduce their commissions to zero. They've released some vague numbers on how much this will cost them and how they plan to make up for that loss. But with its earnings report, Schwab, one of the largest brokers in America, will have to give official guidance on what they expect in terms of revenue and earnings impact. Watch this report to see how badly the move to zero commissions will hit the bottom lines of brokers, at least in the short term. Other brokers will also be reporting this week. Keep an eye on E*TRADE Financial Corp. (ETFC), reporting on Thursday after the close. E*Trade, and most other brokers, have relied on commissions much more than Schwab has, so their projected guidance numbers are likely to be worse.
